 DISCOVERING GOD IN CHINESE CHARACTER

Ming

Chinese characters have been around for 4,500 years and be broken into components called radicals. There are 214 radicals (called bushou) that were popularized by the Emperor Kangxi who commissioned the Kangxi Zidian, a character dictionary listing over 47,000 entries. Being able to recognize common radicals helps in the learning and recognition of new characters.
Look at the example on the right for "bright".

It seems incredible that at one time, the chinese knew and worshipped Shang Di (the ruler above all). When we examine the ancient characters, we see many interesting combinations that correlater with the God of the Bible.

Ming
Bright

Both the sun and the moon give light so when you
put them together, you get "bright".

Sun + Moon = Bright

Zao

1:26 [Chinese Union Version (Simplified)]

In the beginning, the Bible tells us that God spoke the universe into being, and created the first human—Adam.

Look at the Chinese character for the make or create on the right. It is a combination of the radicals for speak and walk, which is consistent with God speaking a moving creation into existence.

"The God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'"
— Genesis 1:26

Zao
Make

Walking + Speak = Make

Fu

God's intention from the beginning was for people to have an unbroken relationship with Himself.

The Chinese character for prosperity portrays clearly God's good plan—a relationship between God and man in a fruitful garden.

Fu
Prosperity

God(radical)  +  One  + Mouth(man)  + Garden = Prosperity

The Bible says,

“...male and female He created them. Then God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it...I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food....' Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
[NKJV]

— Genesis 1:27-31

Jin

God knew that for people to truly have a relationship with Himself based on love, they must have the free will to choose.

The Chinese character for forbid is mad up of trees and a divine sign. The Bible tells us that God gave a command concerning the trees in the garden of Eden.

Jin
Forbid

Trees  + Divine sign = Forbid

Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
— Genesis 2:15-17
Would they believe what God said was true? Would they love and trust
Him enough to obey?

Kun

The Bible tells us that they chose to disobey God, first the woman, and then the man. They ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and began to suffer the consequences.

The Chinese character for difficulty or worry is made up of the boundary around a tree.

Kun
Difficulty

Boundary        +      Tree     =  Difficulty or Worry

The Bible says in Genesis 3:6 —
"When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it."
Adam and Eve's difficulties began after they had crossed God's boundary and ate from the one tree He told them not to eat from. God decreed consequences for the unbelief: The woman to experience pain in childbirth and the man to experience difficulty in farming and the most serious consequence of all; God drove them out of the Garden of Eden.

Zui

Ever since that disobedience, people have been in opposition to God and have experienced guilt.

The modern character for guilt or sin is also consistent with the Bible's account of people's original conflict with God as it is made up of the radical for net over the radical for contradiction 非 (fei) or opposition.

We, like Adam and Eve, are trapped, experiencing guilt when we actively rebel against God's command. Romans 3:23 says "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

Zui
Guilt

Ancient form is made of
self (zi) + bitterness (xin) = Guilt.

But God was not willing to give up His relationship with us.

Although He sent them out of the Garden, He also cared for them and set up a system where the shedding of blood allowed them to receive forgiveness of sins. In many instances, the animals that were killed were bulls and small, unblemished lambs.

"Day after day, every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins."
— Hebrews 10:11

Xi
Sacrifice

 +   +   +    =
Bull    +    Lamb    +    Beautiful    +    Spear    =    Sacrifice

Xiang

Although they received forgiveness through these sacrifices, they could not take away the sins. God had to send His own Son, Jesus Christ—the Lamb of God.

"The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"
—John 1:29

"He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross."
—Colossians 2:13-14

The Chinese character supports the Bible's claim that only through the Divine lamb, can we have a blessed life.

Xiang
Blessed

Divine   +   Lamb    =    Blessed

The sacrifice of God's Lamb gives us a relationship with God that lasts forever!

The ancient character for eternal consisits of a lamb and three strokes of water. Today's character has retained its original meaning: A drop of blood from the sacrificed lamb and water (shui) to cleanse.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
—John 3:16

How can we receive God's gift of eternal life?
The Bible says we must individually receive the
Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.

"God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."    — 2 Corinthians 5:21

Whe we receive Him, an amazing exchange takes place. Jesus takes away our unrighteousness (sins) and gives us His righteousness. The Chinese character for righteousness is a lamb and me.

Yi
Righteousness

Lamb   +   I/Me    =    Righteousness

The Bible says in John 14:6
“Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father except through me.”

Which box represents your life?

A life without Jesus Christ is a life that has not been made right. When I do not accept the sacrifice of the Lamb of God for me, “I” remain separated from Him.

A life with Jesus Christ means a relationship that has been made right in God's sight. By choosing to put the Lamb of God over me, I receive forgiveness and God's blessings as His child.

Xin

The Chinese character for faith or confident belief is made of the radicals person and words. The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10:

“That if you confess with your mouth 'Jesus is Lord', and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

Would you like to receive Jesus Christ into your life?

Faith

We receive Jesus Christ by faith through prayer.

Prayer is talking with God. god knows your heart and is not so concerned with your words as He is with the attitude of your heart. The following is a suggested prayer. You can say this prayer right now if this is the desire of your heart.

Lord Jesus, I believe You are Son of God and You died for me.
Thank You for being the perfect Lamb sacrificed for my sins.
Please come into my heart, be my Lord and Savior and forgive me of all my sins and take control of every area of my life from this moment on. Jesus, fill me with your Holy Spirit and use me for Your glory. I want to serve You and love You all the days of my life. Thank You Father, that I am now Your child, in Jesus' holy name. Amen.

Now that you have received Jesus Christ by faith, as an act of your will, many things have happened.
The Word of God instructs us to meet together often, so take the initiative and call the pastor of a nearby church to ask when they have their services. Continue to read the Bible and pray every day as you let the Lord lead.
